Moment of Decision: EDO 2024

As a member of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, who has had the privilege of closely interfacing with key actors ahead of the upcoming elections, I can categorically assert that the odds are stacked against the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate. This stems from the multitude of internal crisis plaguing the party, as well as the defection of major party chieftains who felt betrayed by Governor Godwin Obaseki's leadership. The situation has undoubtedly weakened the PDP’s chances, particularly as some of its most influential figures have shifted allegiance, causing significant cracks in its support base.

It is important to note that the Labour Party is poised to further complicate the PDP's chances, especially in Edo South, Edo Central, and parts of Edo North. Labour has demonstrated a strong presence, boasting a sitting senator, two federal house of representatives members, and a state house of assembly member. This growing political influence of the Labour Party will likely siphon votes from the PDP, diluting their dominance in these regions. The political landscape has clearly shifted, and Labour’s rising popularity cannot be underestimated.

Additionally, from the recent events between the current Governor and traditional institutions in the state, there seems to be a strong indication that many Edo indigenes will throw their support behind Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The influence of the issue of the artefacts/museum and the action by some Enigie`s (Dukes) taking our revered Monarch, Oba Ewuare II to court could sway a considerable portion of the electorate against the anointed candidate/godson of the incumbent Governor, Obaseki come 21st September 2024. These developments coupled with the defections from PDP and Labour party strong performance, places the APC candidate in a strategically advantageous position.

Moreover, several candidates from other political parties have already begun stepping down in favour of Akpakomiza (Monday Okpebholo), further strengthening his candidacy. This demonstrates a calculated and well-timed political alignment, showing that the choice to affiliate with the APC candidate (Okpebholo) is not only sound but also strategic in ensuring victory.

As we look forward to the elections, it is crucial that the Sen. Monday Okpebholo and his party candidates stay committed to fulfilling their campaign promises, especially those that have resonated most with the people. One such promise that is particularly relevant is the creation of a Diaspora Agency - a commitment that speaks directly to the concerns of many Edo indigenes living abroad. This agency will play a vital role in harnessing the economic and intellectual resources of the diaspora community for the development of the state, and its establishment will be a key factor in maintaining support from these global citizens.

In conclusion, the odds seem to favour the APC and Monday Okpebholo in the forthcoming elections. With a fragmented PDP, Labour’s disruption, and the significant support from traditional institutions and strategic defections, the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo is well positioned as the candidate to beat at the polls. We believe that the desired victory will be achieved, and that this victory will translate into real, tangible progress for Edo State, particularly with the fulfilment of promises like the creation of a Diaspora Agency, which is a priority concern for many.
